Portfolio Project 1; Inspiration, Trends, Fabric & Color, Details

For this collection I am inspired by the decomposition we see every Autumn as plants begin to prepare for Winter. In its essence, the Earth does not create waste. Instead, it breaks down leftover materials to create fuel for future life. Nature is a circular economy. Do the answers we need to improve our supply chain lie in nature? Are they so obvious, that we have literally been stepping on them this entire time? To create an identity rooted in ethical and environmentally friendly practices, I am exploring how we can use basic concepts from nature to be more conscious of our impacts.

To bring to life my warm color palette, I am experimenting with different knit structures that will highlight the colors and natural fibers I am using. I am trying to imitate the process of decomposition by experimenting with sheerness, and manipulated texture through my swatch development. By using different weights and gauges, I will find enough variety to create a well-rounded Autumn collection that will accommodate the transitional weather seen during this season. The future trends I am paying attention to are preppy details, modern workwear, and asymmetrical silhouettes. So far through my design process, I have taken details, such as gathering and zippers, and translated them into knits. I think that this will add versatility to my collection and I will be able to create some unique pieces. With the continuation of my design development I need to start adding some heavier layers and statement sweaters, while also making sure I cover a range of essential basics.
